The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Michigan has changed.

In a notice to customers, the agency directed Michigan residents to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before visiting.

The agency also reminded the public that a visit may not be necessary, noting that many services can be handled online.

"Did you know that you can handle a lot of your business with us online?" the Social Security Administration said.

The agency listed popular online services including reviewing your latest statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal.

Benefits that can be applied for online include retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, as well as appeals of medical decisions.

Account holders can also change their address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print a 1099 through their online account.

The agency pointed customers to its FAQs and to online options for requesting a replacement Medicare card or a replacement Social Security card.

The Social Security Administration encouraged people to create a personal my Social Security account, saying millions have already done so to discover their benefits.
