Representative James Walkinshaw has been actively engaging with constituents across Fairfax during the House recess, focusing on community building and addressing local concerns. These interactions, which he described as his "favorite part of the job," inform his legislative priorities in Congress.
Walkinshaw participated in ten National Night Out events, spanning from Mantua to McLean, where he met with hundreds of families and thanked first responders and community organizers. He emphasized that this "civic spirit" strengthens his advocacy for safer communities, a more effective federal government, and people-first policies.
To assist families with international travel preparations, Walkinshaw's office is hosting a Passport Day on Saturday, August 15, at the West Springfield Government Center. The U.S. Department of State’s Washington Passport Agency will be on-site to process passport applications. Appointments are mandatory, and one appointment can accommodate up to seven family members.
Highlighting the importance of democratic participation, Walkinshaw noted the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. He expressed concern over efforts to restrict voting access, particularly for women and Black voters, and pledged to fight for the restoration of the Act's protections, the passage of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and a nationwide ban on partisan gerrymandering.
In foreign policy, Walkinshaw welcomed South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, reaffirming the strong U.S.-Australia alliance. He underscored the importance of these partnerships for American safety and economic strength, especially "at a time when the Trump administration’s policies are creating uncertainty and straining relationships with many of our closest allies."
Looking ahead, Fairfax students will return to class on Monday, August 24. Families can utilize resources such as the FCPS calendar, immunization guidelines, and family support services. The Virginia Sales Tax Holiday, running August 7–9, offers savings on school supplies. Additionally, the Evenings on the Ellipse concert series continues at the Fairfax County Government Center on August 6 and August 13, with concerts running from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Walkinshaw also recognized Norma, a Braddock Glen resident, on her 100th birthday, celebrating her contributions to the community.
