Three firefighters, including Helitack Crewmember Nicholas "Nick" Alexander Hutcherson, died on June 27, 2026, following a burnover event while responding to initial attack fires in Arizona's Kaibab National Forest.
Hutcherson, 27, a wildland full-time firefighter with six years of service from the U.S. Forest Service, Kaibab National Forest, was involved in the incident with Helitack Squad Leader Emily Barker (U.S. Forest Service – UCR) and Helitack Crewmember Sydney Watson (U.S. Wildland Fire Service – UCR). All three succumbed to their injuries.
The incident occurred in the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit. These fatalities bring the total number of firefighter deaths reported in 2026 to 38. Reports on such incidents aim to analyze causes and prevent future tragedies.
