TIME is reporting that the Trump Administration announced Tuesday it would terminate Obamacare coverage for 760,000 enrollees, alleging widespread fraud. It said Vice President JD Vance, who leads a White House task force aimed at eliminating fraud, told reporters that $2.2 billion in taxpayer funds would be saved by removing the hundreds of thousands of Affordable Care Act enrollees from the public insurance marketplaces. Vance said the Administration expects most of those people are fraudulently enrolled. He added that the Administration would also work to verify the eligibility of roughly 419,000 additional enrollees by confirming they are legal U.S. residents and meet the income threshold for coverage. The Administration will also place a six-month moratorium on new health insurance brokers and agents, Vance said.
TIME is reporting that a new study published Tuesday in Geophysical Research Letters found that greenhouse gases emitted since the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement have made Europe's recent heat waves measurably more intense. It said lead author Jared Trok, a Ph.D. student at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, said the emissions released since the agreement's signing have substantially and significantly increased the intensity of Europe's individual heat waves. The study also determined this held true for Europe's hottest week in every year since at least 2021. TIME said the findings follow this summer's back-to-back heat waves on the continent, which broke records and contributed to at least 35,000 excess deaths.
TIME is reporting that President Donald Trump signed a deal Tuesday on the security of Greenland, the semi-autonomous Danish territory, in a bid to end the standoff over the strategic island. It said the deal follows Trump's repeated threats to annex Greenland, which he called a matter of national security given the mineral-rich Arctic territory's position between the U.S., Russia, and Europe. TIME said the signed agreement stops short of Trump's call for the U.S. to take over Greenland as a territory. In a speech at the U.N. General Assembly, Trump said the deal gives the U.S. permanent control over security and all other needs on the territory, and that no U.S. adversary would be permitted to establish a military presence there or make sensitive investments without express written approval. TIME said some critics have questioned whether the deal differs much from the existing 1951 defense agreement that gave the U.S. military extensive rights in Greenland.
TIME is reporting that DoorDash said Tuesday it reached a $131.5 million settlement to resolve a New York City government investigation that found it underpaid food delivery workers or waited too long to pay them. It said about $115 million will be distributed to 264,000 workers, while the rest will be paid as a fine.
TIME is reporting that hundreds of thousands of children in Gaza have returned to school for the first time in nearly three years. It said at least 540,000 students are expected to attend in-person classes this year in makeshift schools, damaged buildings, and temporary structures.
