Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is urging Angelenos to leverage city resources to stay safe as an Extreme Heat Warning takes effect from August 25 through August 28, marking the year's forecasted hottest week. Hundreds of city libraries, recreation centers, and other locations, including nine dedicated cooling centers with extended hours, will be available and are pet-friendly.

"As a former nurse and a physician assistant, I know firsthand that this heat is something to take extremely seriously, especially for those with underlying health conditions," said Mayor Bass. "I’m making sure the City is prepared to respond to any threats and provide Angelenos relief from the heat. LAFD has predeployed resources citywide and hundreds of facilities, including libraries and rec centers, are available for Angelenos who need to stay cool. Please take this extreme heat seriously – stay hydrated, stay cool, and check on your neighbors.ā€

Nine dedicated cooling centers will operate with extended hours (10:00 AM – 9:00 PM) from Tuesday, August 25, through Friday, August 28, located across the San Fernando Valley, Near Downtown L.A., South L.A., Westside, and Harbor areas. Public pools and splash pads also remain open during normal hours.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is actively monitoring conditions and has prepositioned resources citywide, including helicopters and dozer teams, to respond to incidents. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, remain in air-conditioned spaces, and check on vulnerable family and neighbors. Limiting direct sun exposure between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM is crucial, and 911 should be called immediately for heat stroke symptoms.

Pet owners must never leave animals in vehicles, ensure constant fresh water, keep pets indoors, and avoid walking them during peak heat or on hot surfaces. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) recommends conserving energy by adjusting thermostats to 78 degrees and turning off AC when away to reduce strain on the electrical infrastructure.
