Rubber bullets. Hypothermia-inducing water cannons. Concussion grenades.
The peaceful, prayerful water protectors at Standing Rock were met with horrific violence - all because they asked that their sovereignty and treaty rights be respected. These despicable human rights abuses led to hundreds of thousands of people calling on the big banks funding the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) to divest and a few have already listened. But many banks, like Wells Fargo, doubled down - funding even more pipelines while claiming they support indigenous rights. We will not be silent, we will continue to stand with our indigenous partners and demand justice and accountability.
On October 23, the world's biggest banks will convene in Brazil for a meeting on the Equator Principles - a set of guidelines for environmental and human rights risk management used to determine which projects they will finance. The principles are supposed to ensure indigenous rights are respected and environmental damage is minimized, but many of these same banks chose to fund DAPL. It's clear these banks are failing to consider the danger their projects pose to indigenous communities and our climate.

Will you join us? WHO: Mazaska Talks, Honor the Earth, Indigenous Environmental Network, Sierra Club, 350, and more
WHAT: Divest the Globe Day of Action
WHEN: October 23 - 25
WHERE: A city near you
The movement to defund pipelines is already working! The movement has already moved nearly $75 million from the banks funding the Dakota Access Pipeline. Major cities like Seattle and San Francisco have also responded to public pressure and committed to moving their own accounts from pipeline funders, and there are campaigns underway in New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago, Albuquerque, and many more.
Together we can show major banks that they will be held accountable for funding destructive pipelines that violate indigenous rights.
