SPC Day 1 Fire Weather Outlook
Day 1 Fire Weather Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0257 AM CDT Fri Oct 13 2017 Valid 131200Z - 141200Z ...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COASTAL RANGES AND FOOTHILLS... ...Synopsis... A deep upper trough over the Northwest at the start of the period is expected to move southeastward into the northern Great Basin and northern Rockies through the day on Friday. In the immediate wake of the upper trough, a surface ridge will develop into portions of the Great Basin, resulting in an strengthening pressure gradient over portions of California during the latter half of the period. ...Southern California Coastal Ranges and Foothills... Elevated to locally critical conditions will likely be ongoing at the start of the period Friday morning across portions of the southern CA coastal ranges and foothills, with northerly /northeasterly winds of 15-25 mph expected in conjunction with very poor overnight RH recovery. Critically low RH will become widespread across southern CA by this afternoon. Some weakening of the winds is possible during the afternoon, before a diurnal increase in offshore flow commences later tonight into Saturday morning, resulting in a prolonged threat of potentially critical conditions, especially across the higher terrain to the north and northwest of Los Angeles. ...Portions of central/northern California... Elevated to locally critical conditions are expected to develop across portions of the San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys into the Bay Area ranges/foothills, primarily during the latter half of the period. Critically low RH is likely to develop across much of this area during the afternoon. While winds are expected to be relatively light in most areas early in the day, an increase in northerly /northeasterly winds is expected tonight, especially across western portions of the valleys into adjacent high terrain areas, where sustained winds of 15-25 mph with higher gusts are forecast. Due to uncertainty regarding the duration of concurrent critical wind and RH, no upgrade has been made in this area at this time, but areas impacted by very dry fuels and ongoing fires will be affected by elevated to potentially critical conditions into the overnight hours. ..Dean.. 10/13/2017 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov/fire for graphic product...
