Take Action with the Sierra Club

During what has been a painful week for not only my home of Puerto Rico but our entire country, the Sierra Club community has been a beacon of hope. Thank you.

As I relayed to you the tremendous struggles and appalling conditions I was witnessing in Hurricane Maria's wake, Sierra Club supporters stepped up to help -- some even more than once -- helping us raise an unprecedented $1.2 million from 18,000 individual donations. And 100% of the funds raised will support locally-led relief efforts here in Puerto Rico.

I'm writing to let you know we are putting these generous donations right to work. We're mobilizing volunteers to help our partners from Centro Para la Conservacion del Paisaje deliver meals door-to-door, and we're shipping solar lanterns to partner organization Casa Pueblo to bring light to my island's hardest-hit communities. We're working hand-in-hand with local organizations to plan for a more equitable, sustainable future -- with longer-term solutions like community microgrids, stricter zoning codes on new buildings, and more.

Make no mistake, we have a long road ahead. Many of the families we're encountering in our relief efforts have lost everything. Most of Puerto Rico remains without power. Less than 10% of communications towers remain standing. The island's medical system is near collapse.

But thanks to our generous Sierra Club donors, help is on the way for many. And the coming together of community organizations to support immediate relief from the devastation has been truly inspiring. We will continue to work together to ensure a just and equitable recovery for all Puerto Ricans.

I'm so grateful to have you as part of this historic effort -- and of the Sierra Club family. We’ll keep you up-to-date on our ongoing work here, and how you can continue to help Puerto Rico recover and rebuild in the months and years to come.

In the meantime, thank you -- from the bottom of my heart.

Adriana Gonzalez, Environmental Justice Organizing Representative, Sierra Club Puerto Rico Chapter
