A new $400,000 scholarship programme to build global expertise on climate change, agriculture and food security will boost New Zealands contribution to agricultural greenhouse gas research say Climate Change Minister Paula Bennett and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy. The scholarship, announced today at the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) Council meeting in Tsukuba, Japan, is a joint initiative of the GRA and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research.

Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse today announced details of a new Community Organisation Refugee Sponsorship category to complement the annual refugee quota. "When the Government announced an increase to the refugee quota last year, we also committed to piloting a Community Organisation Refugee Sponsorship category," Mr Woodhouse says. Around $3 million will be invested to build six new classrooms at Te Kura Kaupapa o Ngā Uri a Māui in Gisborne, Education Minister Nikki Kaye and Associate Education Minister Tim Macindoe announced today. Minister Kaye visited the kura this morning with East Coast MP Anne Tolley to share the good news. "Te Kura Kaupapa o Ngā Uri a Māui was originally established in 1999 as a kura for years one to eight, and was Gisbornes first Te Reo total immersion school," says Ms Kaye.

Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee has denounced in the strongest terms todays missile launch by North Korea. The missiles flight path took it over Japan, landing in the northern Pacific. "Directly threatening the safety of the citizens of another country by flying a missile over them is a dangerous new escalation," Mr Brownlee says. "This is a totally unacceptable threat in a region of considerable importance to New Zealand.

New Zealand has signed up to the International Open Data Charter, in a move to help drive innovation, support public accountability, and encourage engagement with government, Statistics Minister Scott Simpson has announced.

"The Government holds a vast amount of valuable data on behalf of New Zealanders. Open government data is non-personal, unclassified and non-confidential, and is freely available to anyone to use and share. Personal, confidential, and classified data remain protected," Mr Simpson says.
