SPC 1200Z Day 1 Outlook
Day 1 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1220 AM CDT Tue Apr 17 2018 Valid 171200Z - 181200Z ...NO SEVERE THUNDERSTORM AREAS FORECAST... ...SUMMARY... A few thunderstorms are expected mainly from eastern Nebraska into Iowa late Tuesday, with perhaps a few lightning strikes across the northern High Plains. ...Synopsis and Discussion... As an upper trough lifts across the Northeast, high pressure over the eastern Gulf of Mexico and southeastern states will result in stable conditions for those areas. Low-level moisture will return northward across the southern Plains around the western periphery of this high, in advance of an upper trough moving across the Rockies. Rapid cooling aloft and increasing winds will spread across the central High Plains during the day as low pressure forms over KS. However, moisture will be limited with a ribbon of 50s F dewpoints across OK and into eastern KS. This air mass will remain capped for surfaced based parcels during the day, but warm advection during the evening and overnight north of a warm front roughly along I-70 from KS into MO will likely result in scattered thunderstorms after 03Z along the KS/NE border and into IA. Instability may be sufficient for small hail, but the severe threat appears very low. ..Jewell/Cook.. 04/17/2018 Read more
