Direct Democracy for Earth Day

Arizona has a robust constitution relative to direct democracy. We, the people, can create laws, promote constitutional amendments, and stop bad ideas via the initiative and referendum process. For Earth Day we are encouraging you to step up and help to promote policies to better protect the planet and our democracy. Please help circulate petitions and promote Clean Energy for a Healthy Arizona and the Outlaw Dirty Money campaigns. See details below. We also have an update on the ban on trophy hunting of wild cat species effort below.

Clean Energy for a Healthy Arizona Sierra Club has endorsed the Clean Energy for a Healthy Arizona campaign to put a measure on the ballot that would require that utilities generate 50% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2030. This would help put Arizona on track with neighboring states and re-establish our leadership position for renewable energy, especially solar. To find out more and to request a petition, please go to http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=5f5abc65717372c1a191d87c38b2cac751077b0984a6569e837750650bf7e99611e56c45643226bac28409979e0a0a54e4fc9e9e7cfde0b8

Outlaw Dirty Money The Outlaw Dirty Money campaign aims to bring more disclosure to our elections, so we all know more about who is funding campaigns to elect candidates and fund ballot measures in Arizona. Sierra Club has endorsed this initiative to bring more sunshine to our elections. Also, recently the Arizona Republic endorsed the effort: http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=5f5abc65717372c14b5ccedb9493f83dc4001ee498cf59a8ed3fad9fe3f787fec3d16b592a4fd08e98234b94a2a1f359e546c4e1893792b9 To get your petitions and sign up to help, go to http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=5f5abc65717372c128ca262de80275f3d4bf278d1d3f9e24b425b184acde15be4d7655d2d0ed94579e9a737dbee00b496436b62356d4347a

Arizonans for Wildlife As some of you may know, but many of you may not, Arizonans for Wildlife has suspended the campaign to put a measure on the ballot to ban trophy hunting of five wild cat species. The campaign indicated that the challenges associated with the change in law to require "strict compliance" was a factor. This has meant larger costs and more time for signature gathering. There were also some issues with a shifting focus for the main group sponsoring the initiative, Humane Society of the United States. We are sorry this is not moving forward, but we commit to work with you all to advocate for protection of these and other wildlife species.

Don't Let the AZ Legislature Block Clean Energy

Ask your representatives to vote NO on HCR2017 (Now: renewable energy standards; corporation commission). This bill is a cynical attempt to confuse voters and stop clean energy from advancing. HCR2017 would refer to the ballot a measure with a name that is nearly identical to the citizen initiative to require 50% renewable energy by 2030, but unfortunately HCR2017 includes language that would allow the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) to do nothing relative to advancing clean energy.

HCR2017 is a recipe to do nothing and that is the last thing that we need. Renewable energy is a key part of our states future. It can help to sustain our economy and protect our air and water, but the legislature and the utilities need to get out of the way for that to happen.

Please send a message to your representatives today.

Thank you!

Support Energy Efficiency, Our Cleanest Cheapest Energy Resource!

Each year, Arizona Public Service (APS) and Tucson Electric Power (TEP) file plans to implement energy efficiency (Demand Side Management or DSM) to indicate how they will meet the requirements of Arizona's Energy Efficiency Standard. This year, both utilities have filed plans that are inadequate and that fail to take full advantage of our cheapest cleanest energy resource -- energy efficiency. The energy we save means less water use, less pollution, and more dollars in our pockets. It is outrageous that APS is cutting programs that save customers dollars at the same time it is raising rates.

Please ask the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) to require APS and TEP to do more to promote energy efficiency in these plans!

You can sign the petition to the ACC here: http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=5f5abc65717372c1a75fd777baa308571089880f51dda4bcc8ec65866f8bb25abe5c9e4145c37e3d823d50d68c2f5d79b8c2f755f8211520138d8fc82b34dbee
