Stop a planned trophy hunt of Greater Yellowstone's grizzlies!

By Newsroom America Feeds at 29 Mar 2018

As soon as September 1st, two dozen of the Greater Yellowstone region’s treasured grizzly bears could be killed in a trophy hunt in Wyoming. Tell WY Governor Matt Mead to protect iconic grizzlies and stop the trophy hunt!

Dear Mary,

Despite strong public and Tribal opposition and active litigation challenging the removal of Endangered Species Act protections last summer, trophy hunting of the iconic grizzly bear, could start this fall -- just as bears are fattening up for hibernation. The hunt proposed by Wyoming Game and Fish would allow trophy hunters to kill 24 grizzly bears, including females.1 Bears could be killed as soon as they step out of the national parks, except for in a small buffer area proposed for the east side of Grand Teton north of Jackson Hole.

Wyoming's extreme trophy hunting proposal will set grizzly recovery in the Greater Yellowstone region -- one of the Endangered Species Act’s greatest achievements-- back by decades. This is a bad proposal for grizzlies and a bad proposal for the Greater Yellowstone region. Wyoming’s Governor can influence the Game and Fish Commission to withdraw this irresponsible proposal. Let’s make sure he hears our message, loud and clear -- no trophy hunt of Greater Yellowstone’s irreplaceable grizzly bears!

Yellowstone’s grizzlies are counting on you! Tell WY Governor Mead -- stop plans for a trophy hunt!

Killing bears, especially females can have a rapid and detrimental impact on the overall population. It has taken forty years of endangered species protection to increase the population by roughly 500 bears in the Yellowstone region. The growth rate of the population has been essentially flat since the early 2000s, largely due to record-high levels of human-related grizzly bear deaths in recent years. Wyoming should focus on continued recovery of grizzly bears, preventing conflicts and promoting coexistence and safety for people and bears -- not trophy hunting.

Animal lovers and wildlife watchers bring more revenue to Wyoming’s economy than trophy hunters do. Revenue from wildlife watchers like you brought $360 million into Wyoming in 2016.2 Communities surrounding Yellowstone have enjoyed a $10 million annual increase in tourist spending since wolves were returned to the area in the mid-1990s. Let’s remind Governor Mead that his economy depends on iconic wildlife including the grizzly and demand he put pressure on his agencies to call off this hunt.

Tell Governor Mead to use his influence and power to stop the trophy hunt!

It took decades to bring grizzly bears back from the brink of extinction; now is not the time to jeopardize that hard-won progress for a cruel trophy hunt.

Thanks for all you do to protect Greater Yellowstone grizzlies,

Bonnie Rice Greater Yellowstone/Northern Rockies Senior Campaign Representative Sierra Club
