Oil spills everywhere?

DEADLINE: The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is collecting comments on a catastrophic new offshore drilling five-year plan. We have until March 9 to tell them how unpopular and short-sighted this plan is. Deanne --

The Trump administration proposed opening 90 percent of US waters to offshore drilling between 2019 and 2024. That's right -- if this plan becomes law, the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, and Eastern Gulf coasts will all be in the hands of Big Oil. That means oil rigs from Maine to Louisiana, and from Alaska down to California.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is collecting comments on this catastrophic new five-year plan and the deadline for comments is Friday, March 9. Protect our oceans and tell BOEM how unpopular and short-sighted this plan is.

PROTECT OUR OCEANS: http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=f89f440a4ddc6043a62bd293cd9bc209f1e6590919fd7e20f1f4ab6cb796f6ee6c510674aa009c5de35d2c06865d420a37a0aa57532155f51e51d478be699ca1

Trump isn’t doing this to please his constituents -- in fact, governors of states like North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, Maryland, Oregon, and California have explicitly opposed drilling off their coasts. Instead, this is a blatant gift to the oil companies that have bankrolled his campaign and staffed his administration.

Stand with coastal communities. Tell BOEM we will not stand for drilling in our oceans! http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=f89f440a4ddc6043a62bd293cd9bc209f1e6590919fd7e20f1f4ab6cb796f6ee6c510674aa009c5de35d2c06865d420a37a0aa57532155f51e51d478be699ca1

If Trump's plan becomes reality, spills will be inevitable -- and devastating. In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill damaged 1,313 miles of coastline. That's more than the entire length of California, or half the Atlantic coast. Offshore oil spills happen frequently, devastating marine environments, commercial fishing industries and tourism businesses. Even without spills, offshore oil causes climate pollution. At a time of increasing devastation from climate change, our government should not be doubling down on its investment in fossil fuels.

This gift to Big Oil and Gas is an attempt to overturn protections put in place for the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, and hits reset on the plan the Obama administration completed in 2016. At that time, the activists like you -- over 3.3 million people! -- spoke out in support of protecting our coasts.

We can't allow this administration to jeopardize our waters, wildlife, and coastal communities. Take action to tell BOEM that the public has spoken: No more offshore drilling! http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=f89f440a4ddc6043a62bd293cd9bc209f1e6590919fd7e20f1f4ab6cb796f6ee6c510674aa009c5de35d2c06865d420a37a0aa57532155f51e51d478be699ca1

Thanks for all you do to protect our oceans,

Lena Moffitt Senior Director, Our Wild America Campaign Sierra Club
