June 8, 2017 North Korean Nuclear Threat Model Makes Headlines

A 3D, virtual reality model of the North Korean nuclear test site Punggye-ri at Mantap Mountain, created by the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) for NTI, was recently featured in a Vice News broadcast on HBO. The model also headlined articles on Vice News and The Verge earlier this spring. It is one of several pieces designed to educate readers about North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs. Other NTI/CNS North Korea resources include a new infographic of North Korea’s missile capability, our North Korea country profile , and another new tool: an updated comprehensive missile testing database and interactive map of every North Korean missile test since 1984. READ MORE Ernest Moniz Awarded Jubilee Medal by Kazakhstan Ambassador Kazykhanov NTI Co-Chairman and CEO Ernest Moniz received a 25th Anniversary of Independence Medal last week from the Republic of Kazakhstan for his significant contributions to bilateral cooperation. Moniz, the former U.S. Secretary of Energy, co-chaired the Kazakhstan-United States Special Commission on Energy Partnership. Ambassador Erzhan Kasyanov also cited Moniz’s work on the Iran nuclear agreement and his long and distinguished career in public service and academia. READ MORE NTI and CENESS Sponsor Radiological Security Workshop in Kazakhstan NTI and the Moscow-based Center for Energy and Security Studies (CENESS), in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Government of Kazakhstan, sponsored a radiological security workshop in Astana, Kazakhstan on May 24-25th. The workshop explored opportunities to improve radiological security and prevent the illicit trafficking of radioactive sources. “We commend the Government of Kazakhstan for hosting this important regional meeting which will strengthen nuclear and radiological security in this region,” said NTI Co-Chairman and then-CEO Sam Nunn . Addressing radiological security in Central Asia is one of more than 50 recommendations made in a joint NTI and CENESS report on U.S. – Russia cooperation in the nuclear sphere.
