NYC Strengthens Protections for Freelance Workers
On November 16, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the Freelance Isn't Free Act, protecting freelance workers from businesses that try to avoid payment. The bill requires that a written contract be created for work billed at $800 or more and provides freelancers with avenues for reimbursement if a company violates the agreement. DCA will be developing tools and providing resources to both freelancers and hiring parties to help them understand their rights and responsibilities under this new law, which goes into effect on May 15, 2017.
