WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republican leadership chose to abandon their promise of regular order:

"It is very disappointing that Speaker Ryan and Leader McCarthy have chosen to abandon their promise of an open appropriations process. As soon as it became clear they might have to vote again on whether to protect LGBT Americans from discrimination or vote on other critical issues that would show their true values - as soon as they realized an open and transparent process would not serve their agenda - they shut it down. That's not what the American people expect from their Congress.

"I urge Republican leaders to open the process back up. I urge the Speaker to keep the promise he made when assuming the gavel in October, when he said: 'We will not duck the tough issues. We will take them head on.' The American people deserve no less."
