WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight after Republicans in the House of Representatives passed two amendments permitting discrimination against LGBT individuals:
“This evening, House Republicans passed two amendments to the Energy & Water appropriations bill that would explicitly permit discrimination against LGBT individuals and families and that express support for the passage of North Carolina’s dangerous anti-transgender law. After the events on the Floor last Thursday, there can be no doubt about Republicans’ extreme anti-LGBT views and their intention to continue using their House Majority to denigrate, to disparage, and to discriminate against millions of Americans simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
“These actions demonstrate the very real challenges still facing the LGBT community even after the achievement of marriage equality and the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ They also underscore the critical importance of passing the Equality Act in order to ban discrimination against LGBT people in areas including housing, public accommodations, jury service, education, and employment once and for all.
“I want to thank Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney for again sponsoring an amendment that would prohibit the federal government from doing business with contractors who discriminate against LGBT individuals, and I am pleased that it passed the House, as it should have last week. I will continue working with him, with the LGBT Equality Caucus, and with the rest of the House Democratic Caucus to push for Congressional action to end discrimination and recognize the full equality and equal dignity of every LGBT American.”
