WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight after it was announced that Congressman Mark Takai has decided not to seek re-election:

"Mark Takai has been an outstanding Member of Congress and of the Democratic Caucus. Though he has only been in office since 2015, he has served the people of Hawaii's First District well, and he has made an impact in the House on their behalf. He came to the House with a wealth of experience and expertise, both from his time as a leader in the Hawaii House of Representatives and as an officer in the Hawaii Army National Guard.

"I wish Mark well as he turns his focus to battling cancer, and I have no doubt that he will fight it with the same tenacity that he has fought for jobs, opportunities, and equality for Hawaiians and all Americans. I join in sending Mark, his wife Sami, and their children Matthew and Kaila my prayers."
