(Newsroom America) -- U.S. Commerce Department Secretary John Bryson has resigned, two weeks after being treated for a seizure, which led to a series of minor traffic accidents.
Bryson, 68, has been in office since October. He was found unconscious in his Lexus vehicle June 9 after the second of a pair of collisions, according to police. His office later said he had a seizure, which led to him taking medical leave two days later.
In a letter to the department Thursday, Bryson said he was resigning in order to prevent his situation from becoming a distraction to the agency and the Obama administration.
Bryson drove his car into the rear of a stopped vehicle, then struck another car two miles away about five minutes later.
Police have been investigating potential felony hit-and-run charges.
