High Court Tosses FCC Indecency Policy

By Newsroom America Staff at 21 Jun 2012

(Newsroom America) -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a Federal Communications Commission policy that levied fines and sanctions at broadcasters for curse words and nudity aired during programming.

Justices declined to issue a broad ruling on whether the policy was constitutional, but instead concluded that broadcasters could not have known beforehand that obscenities during an awards program or a brief shot of nudity on an episode of ABC's NYPD Blue show would lead to sanctions.

The high court went onto to say that the FCC could revise its indecency policy.
