Chin up, the Great American Eclipse is today!

21 Aug 00:00 | Media

For the first time in 99 years, today people across the continental US will be able to see a total solar eclipse. The eclipse will be partially visible across a large swath of the United States, while those in the 70 mile wide “path of totality” stretching from Oregon to South Carolina will be able to see the moon completely cover the sun. Whether it’s been on your calendar for years or you’ve been in the dark until now...we hope our special content (and tips!) give you a sliver of insight. read more »

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - Unrest continues.

20 Aug 21:37 | SciTech

Aug 21, 2017 00:34 - Unrest continues at Cleveland Volcano. Elevated surface temperatures at the summit and a short plume exending from the volcano were observed in satellite data from today. Light degassing from the summit was observed in web camera images throughout today. No significant activity observed in seismic and infrasound data over the past day. Cleveland volcano is monitored with a limited real-time seismic network, which inhibits AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption may be possible ...read more »

AVO Pavlof YELLOW/ADVISORY - No actvity observed.

20 Aug 21:37 | U.S. News

Aug 21, 2017 00:34 - No activity observed in cloudy satellite web camera images. No significant activity has been detected in seismic and infrasound data over the past day. The level of unrest at Pavlof can change quickly and the progression to eruptive activity can occur with little or no warning. We continue to monitor Pavlof closely and will provide any new information about the status of the volcano when or if it becomes available.read more »

AVO Bogoslof ORANGE/WATCH - Heightened unrest continues.

20 Aug 21:37 | SciTech

Aug 21, 2017 00:34 - Unrest continues at Bogoslof Volcano. No significant activity has been observed in seismic data over the past day. Very weakly elevated surface temperatures consistent with a warm lake were observed in one satellite image from the past day. The Aviation Color Code remains at ORANGE and the Alert Level remains at WATCH. Bogoslof volcano remains at a heightened state of unrest and in an unpredictable condition. Activity can escalate quickly with explosions producing high-altitude (>15,000 ft) volcanic clouds with little to no detectable precursory activity. Some ...read more »
