AVO Bogoslof ORANGE/WATCH - No new activity since explosion at 8:40-8:44 UTC.Color code lowered to ORANGE.

5:09 pm Eastern | U.S. News

Jun 24, 2017 19:54 - No further explosions or ash emissions have been detected at Bogoslof Volcano since the explosive event at 0:40-0:44 AKDT (8:40-8:44 UTC), June 24. Since then, Bogoslof seismicity has remained low and nothing noteworthy has been detected in satellite, infrasound or lightning data. We are therefore lowering the Aviation Color Code to ORANGE and the Alert Level to WATCH. Additional ash-producing eruptions could occur at any time, and precursory unrest may be minor or not detectable.read more »

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - No explosive activity observed this week.

23 Jun 17:08 | U.S. News

Jun 23, 2017 20:09 - No explosive activity was detected at Cleveland Volcano this week. Weakly elevated surface temperatures were observed in satellite images on June 19-23, and occasional clear views of the summit by web camera showed only light steaming. No activity has been observed in seismic or infrasound data. Cleveland volcano is monitored with a limited real-time seismic network, which inhibits AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption may be possible using a combination of seismic, infrasound, ...read more »

AVO Pavlof YELLOW/ADVISORY - Steam and gas clouds observed all week.Weakly elevated surface temperatures observed.

23 Jun 17:08 | U.S. News

Jun 23, 2017 20:09 - No unusual activity has been observed in seismic or infrasound data this week. Minor vapor plumes have been observed extending from the summit on several days this week when web camera views were clear. Weakly elevated surface temperatures were observed in satellite data on June 16, 20, 21, and 22. Vapor emissions, with or without minor amounts of volcanic ash, are common and may occur from the summit vent at any time. Periods of more vigorous ash emission and lava fountaining also are possible and could occur with only subtle changes in the level of seismic ...read more »

AVO Bogoslof ORANGE/WATCH - Unrest continues. No explosive eruptions this week.

23 Jun 17:08 | SciTech

Jun 23, 2017 20:09 - Volcanic unrest at Bogoslof continues. Slightly elevated surface temperatures were observed in satellite data this morning and steam emissions have been observed intermittently during the past week. There has been no further explosive activity since the event on June 13, but it is likely that the volcano remains in a restless condition. Volcanic explosions producing high-altitude (>15,000 ft) volcanic clouds with little or no warning remain possible. Some previous explosions have been preceded by an increase in earthquake activity that allowed for short-term ...read more »

Celebrating businesses giving back this Ramadan

23 Jun 03:15 | Media

In the heart of Istanbul, where I was born and raised, is the Hagia Sophia, a breathtakingly beautiful monument with a storied history. Over the centuries it has been a cathedral, a mosque, and a museum. When you stand inside, you see Arabic calligraphy alongside Christian relics. From afar you see its minarets surrounding a Byzantine church. While each visitor identifies in her own way with the Hagia Sophia, it gives everyone a sense of wonder.   For me, the month of Ramadan is similar. It’s a month when Muslims take time to reflect on their own paths of personal and spiritual growth. While this experience is unique to each individual, the act of giving back to one’s community is shared by Muslims the world over. In Turkey there is an expression: “We are created equally, but our lots in life are given differently.” During Ramadan, Muslims from all walks of life help those in their own communities who are less fortunate.read more »
